The Nautilus collection was first introduced in 1976 and was based on Gerald Genta's artistic vision. The Nautilus is seen as an innovative luxury watch because its design is inspired by the shape of the portholes of the Nautilus, the fictional submarine depicted in Captain Nemo's adventures in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The bezel is shaped like an octagon with slightly rounded corners.
The first steel model is the reference 3700, also called Jumbo because of its dimensions (42 mm long). Many versions were later produced, including for women. The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1A was introduced in 2006 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Nautilus. It is available and configurable in various options and precious materials, including steel, yellow gold, rose gold, white gold and platinum. The dial is also available in several colors. Obviously, this reference is based on the historic 3700, with some differences, the main ones being: A 43 mm case instead of 42 mm A lighter and more gradual blue, giving a more modern appearance Wider grooves SuperLuminova (formerly Tritium) luminescent hour markers This version has a second hand It uses a modern Caliber 324 SC The logo is written in a different font and positioned higher The power reserve is increased from 35h to 45h
